In my first term on the City Council, I have been busy working to get things done for Ward 7 and all of Northampton. Here are just some of the things I’ve been working on and accomplished since January, 2014:

Responding to and Working Side-by-Side with You

  • Addressed over 170 requests and concerns from Ward 7 residents and others throughout Northampton
  • Created a Ward 7 listserv and Facebook page to promote communication and help keep Ward 7 residents informed about Ward and City news and information
  • Worked closely with the Leeds Civic Association to clean up the Main Street common and address noise and litter along the rail trail and Mill River paths
  • Worked with Bridge Road residents to have safety equipment installed at crosswalks
  • Shepherded four traffic calming applications in Florence and Leeds
  • Developed excellent working relationships with city departments to ensure resolution of constituent issues

Making Northampton a Fair, Just, Affordable, and Welcoming Community for All Its Residents

  • Supported the creation of affordable housing for low-income individuals and families
  • Co-sponsored Northampton’s Trust Act resolution to ensure that immigrants living and working in Northampton cannot be detained and handed over to immigration authorities for non-criminal offenses and traffic violations
  • Amended Northampton’s Vibrant Sidewalks Resolution to include resident and business owner input gathered at public hearings about making Downtown Northampton and the Center of Florence more vibrant and welcoming
  • Proposed to Northampton’s Human Rights Commission that we conduct a series of listening sessions with communities of color throughout the city to deepen our understanding of their experiences of Northampton as their home, and address inequities
  • Made Northampton more family friendly – especially for working parents — by obtaining commitment from the Mayor to change Recreation Department policy to allow child care providers to be added to family season passes at Musante Beach
  • Promoted arts and culture in our city by seeking grant opportunities for the Northampton Arts Council and Center for the Arts, and assisted with grant writing; supported and helped publicize Florence Night Out; assisting the Young at Heart Chorus to find funding

Improving Northampton’s Environmental and Public Health

  • Supported a pesticide-free Florence Fields
  • Worked with the Health Department and Mayor to try to establish a Pesticide Reduction Task Force to ensure a significant reduction in pesticide use around City schools and municipal areas
  • Participated in a tree inventory for the City, and advocated for a strong Tree Commission and Tree Warden
  • Co-sponsored pipeline resolution calling for transparency from MA gas companies; crafted amendment calling for them to, rather than install new pipeline, repair existing pipeline for leaks, and stop passing on the cost of leaks to customers
  • Worked with advocates to identify a location for large-scale composting for the City
